Harlingen Real Estate
Harlingen was once known as Six-Shooter Junction because the early settlers of European descent were employed by some branch of local law enforcement. Our community first began at Harlingen station, on the St. Louis, Brownsville & Mexico Railroad. The station was named for Col. Uriah Lott's, the president of the railroad, mother, Van Harlingen.
Early developers Col. Lott and Lon C. Hill were excited to expand the station into a thriving town. Surveyors spent countless hours laying out the land to build 60-foot wide streets, 15-foot wide sidewalks, and lots for sale to merchants and families.
Those early plans carried forward to the construction of the Harlingen Army Airfield when war broke out in WWII. The gunnery school produced over 48,000 trained military soldiers during its tenure. After the war, the base went through several transitions before closing in 1962. Today, commercial cargo planes belonging to FedEx and UPS land at The Valley International Airport, and United Launch Alliance has a fabrication facility on site.
United Launch Alliance, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin combined forces to aid in 85 satellites that have been launched into orbit from the site. Weather, GPS, military and communications satellites are now streaming information to us back on Earth thanks to their facility.
Living in Harlingen
Living in Harlingen means living in one of the top 10 most economical places to live in the U.S., with the least expensive cost of living in the country. We have a low unemployment rate compared to state and national statistics, a fact we are proud to feature. And the crime rate has been on the decline for the past seven years. The community, both official, and volunteer is committed to keeping Harlingen safe.
Our close proximity to the southern migratory path of dozens of species of birds allows visitors to feast their eyes on feathered friends during the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. Usually held in November, the festival has been a part of our cultural calendar for over 20 years. It's a beautiful blend of agriculture and tourism, a way to promote our territory while preserving the natural habitat of the birds.
Another one of our unique cultural highlights is our murals. They are a signature attraction, so much so that Segway tours have formed around cruising by the massive outdoor artworks.

We also host Harlingen Art Night, a chance for local arts and craftspeople to show off their talents to the community. This fun gathering happens the last Friday of every month in Downtown Harlingen.
Our Cinco de Mayo celebrations are memorable to say the least. School children learn traditional dances and customs during the year and perform their new skills for friends and family near the May 5th calendar date, it's fun for everyone.
The result of all these positive experiences is evident in our real estate market. Home sales are increasing, up 24% from 2013 to 2014. The local Habitat for Humanity and Rotary Club organizations are building affordable throughout the city.
