In Hidalgo County, the real estate for sale in La Joya, Texas rests between Mission and Rio Grande City. The name translates to "the jewel," seemingly because the valuable land hovered above the floodplain like a precious stone mounted above the setting. The area was initially referenced to as Tabasco by Spanish settlers. Unfortunately, the first congregation and property were wiped out by the floods of 1908 and 1909.
On a positive note, and fortunately for current residents, Grupo Folklorico Tabasco, a dance troupe, dedicated to the continuation of local cultural customs, carries on the earliest reference to the community. One of our elementary schools is also named Tobasco, a nod to our beginnings. The population of La Joya today hovers around 4,100 residents.
Mesquite trees and Buffalo Grass dot the landscape, just like they did 200 years ago when records of the first inhabitants began. The introduction of irrigation in 1898 gave farmers hope for producing crops despite the rain administered by mother nature. Irrigation changed the face of farming in South Texas. What was once an arid climate at the mercy of rainfall soon became a year-round producer of exotic crops like citrus.
Athletic competition has been a part of La Joya culture since the 1930s, with both young men and women competing for winning seasons. Matchups are more than opportunities for bragging rights and quoting stats; they bring together communities, friends, and families. Students and fans take advantage of the occasions by reconnecting with their peers and other community members.
La Joya ISD currently provides organized athletics in:
Twenty-Three elementary schools, eight middle schools, four Alternative Education Centers, three "Early College" high schools, and three comprehensive high schools ( 7,500 students, grades 9 to 12) give pupils in the La Joya ISD ample learning opportunities. One superintendent, also a graduate of La Joya ISD, holds the honor of Superintendent of The Year from the Texas Association of School Boards.
But, it isn't always the formal education that provides educational benefits to pupils. The Gifts of Love initiative, a program in existence for over 30 years, donates new toys, clothing, and household items to families in need at the holiday season.
